One of the most fascinating and soon-to-be time consuming things to come out of this year’s visit to Balticon was the issue of Podcasting.
The term “podcast” is a portmanteau word (see previous post) ; a combination of “iPod” and “broadcast.” It is an audio (or video) digital file that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable mp3 players (like iPods) or computers. Basically, people subscribe to the podcast and ’episodes’ are then downloaded automatically to their computer as they become available.
I thoroughly enjoy blogging, but more than once have lamented the fact that the amount of space available on a web log page for commentary is limited based on the fact that most people aren’t comfortable reading long posts on-screen. Podcasting seems like an excellent addition for other more detailed subject matter.
It is my hope to start a regular (hopefully weekly) ”i on Washington” disability podcast and with the encouragement of CVS supporters (http://www.cvswriters.com) Renee and I also plan a second series to cover in more depth writing advice, comments and interviews; “Unleaded - Fuel for Writers.” So far, we are in the midst of Tee Morris’ (http://www.teemorris.com) and Evo Terra’s (http://www.sliceofscifi.com/) ”Podcasting for Dummies” (Hey, we met the writers so don’t feel so lame for reading an actual “dummies” book). And, not one for wasting time, we’re already playing with microphones and testing out scripts.

1I am new to this style of communication, so please bear with me. I do not know blog protocol or writing shortcuts and at the start, the writing might be a little jerky. I am going to do my best to keep up my end.
I will start by saying that I am an Optimist. It is my guide and goal. I do not wear rose colored glasses and my optimism is both personal and planetary. It is also conservative in nature. In politics I feel the 10th Amendment to the Constitution is the most important one for our society and maybe (if it could be implemented) the world. The internet is the tool that will eventually end violent conflict in the world. My subculture is in Fandom and has been a guide spirit for me for thirty seven years. I like debate, but find I am a counter puncher. I must admit that I setup the situation by mild or not so mild bating of my audience or opponent. Finally, I have had and plan to have (I plan to live to 120) a good life.
Day, I hope this is what your blog is about. If it isn’t, let know what direction would be better, and I will comply. To those who read this, let’s cross swords and then go eat a bowl of cherries.

2Bill! Good to see ya. Hopefully you’ll find some of that debate here although I will admit that things usually tend to be rather quiet.

3Hi Day,
I may have visited your blog once before but I’ve just rediscovered it and look forward to reading more and learning more about what you do. Thank you for the link to Steve’s blog (Stephen Kuusisto) on your blogroll. I’m pleased to return the favor. Welcome to the Planet of the Blind!
I couldn’t help but notice your interest in disability and the media and I’m wondering if you’ve heard yet of [with]tv. It’s a cable television channel “of, by, and for people with disabilities…and everyone else” currently under development. The folks there are looking for input and feedback by people interested in disability. They have a new blog and a guest book they are hoping people will sign to offer support. I’m sure they’d love to hear from you. Tell them Connie sent you!
Feel free to follow the links in this post: http://kuusisto.typepad.com/planet_of_the_blind/2007/06/withtv-a-televi.html
I’ll be curious as to what you think. I’m just trying to help spread the word!
Looking forward to getting to know you…

4Connie;
Thanks for your note! Actually, I remember speaking with Howard when it was still the PwDBC (People with Disabilities Broadcasting Corporation) and he’d just made the initial announcement a couple of years ago. I was still working for the American Council of the Blind and offered whatever support we could for his endeavor. I still think it’s a great idea and hope it gets moving.
