W00t! W00t has been named Merriam-Webster’s 2007 word of the year. This cute little exclamation of joy was chosen by visitors to the their website and beat out other words such as facebook and conundrum to win this year’s honor.
W00t!, derived from l33t (leet or elite) speak came from the online gaming world where is supposedly stood for “We Owned the Other Team” and has been taking the world by storm ever since.
Merriam-Webster’s president, John Morse, said “w00t” was an ideal choice because it blends whimsy and new technology and “shows a really interesting thing that’s going on in language. It’s a term that’s arrived only because we’re now communicating electronically with each other.”
